Alan was confused by the care system and needed advice on whether his Brother, Brendon, should be paying for his care having recently moved out of Hospital into a Nursing Home. He made a 10 minute free appointment through the online booking form.
He hadn’t been consulted on the move into a home and Brendan’s was determined to return to his home. No one had explained the procedure and he hadn’t yet received a bill from the home and didn’t know whether that was right or not…
Alan was concerned that he hadn’t been asked to pay anything and was “expecting a big bill at some point”!
Some of his questions were;
- Can Brendon move back home?
- Will the Council arrange care for Brendon at home if he does move back?
- How much will he have to pay?
- Does he have to pay for his own care?
- Will someone help him at night?
We arranged another call and had just over an hour on the phone with Alan to establish that Brendon had been moved out of Hospital on a Discharge to Assess pathway. He wasn’t eligible for full Health funding and was able to move home following 5 weeks in a Nursing Home. We helped Alan find suitable care and request a Local Authority Care Act assessment. Brendon was going to be considered a ‘self-funder’ with over the upper funding level of £23’250 but had not claimed any disability benefits and had Council tax Exemption entitlement so we were able to increase his income to help him pay for the support he needed to stay at home
It was a pleasure to help this family through their care journey and help Brendon return home with additional benefits that would make his care bill easier to pay!
