Dec 2024
Winter Fuel Payments are designed to help with the higher energy bills in the colder months, and for those on a tight budget, these costs can be daunting. If you’re a pensioner or supporting someone who is, understanding Pension Credit and Winter Fuel Payments can make a big difference.
If you have higher utility bills because of an illness or disability it is also worth contacting your utility company to ask for a vulnerable person discount.
Here’s a straightforward guide to help you navigate these benefits, check your eligibility, and ensure you’re not missing out.
What is the Winter Fuel Payment?
The Winter Fuel Payment is a tax-free annual payment to help pensioners who are in receipt of a qualifying means tested benefit, to cover heating costs during the colder months.
Who Can Get It?

- You were born on or before September 24, 1957.
